My company just announced to my department that they are moving us from our office in Los Angeles to Phoenix.
We have been offered relocation but there is a catch. If we move to Arizona we have to take a 10% cut in pay because they are paying our relocation expenses to move and because the cost-of-living is lower in Arizona. Everybody in my department is not happy about the 10% cut in pay. My question though is whether it is worth moving for a company that would take advantage of their employees like that. We were never told that there would be a 10% decrease in salary when they first talked about moving our department out-of-state so they basically lied to us to make it sound like they really don't want to offer relocation to existing employees and would rather hire talent that is already in Arizona.
I am almost tempted to take my chances on unemployment at the end of this year when they offer me severance if I don't move to Arizona.
